Air Force's lack of depth at cornerback opens door for Byrd

Air Force sophomore Brenton Byrd thought coaches were kidding when, after six spring practices, they told him they wanted to try him at cornerback.

I was like, ‘Yeah, right, they're just playing around,'" said Byrd, a Harrison graduate.

After all, Byrd never had played the position, even in high school. He entered spring drills listed as the backup tailback behind Savier Stephens, who is injured.

But Air Force has little depth or experience at cornerback. Both starters and a reserve from the 2007 squad will graduate. Plus, Kevin Rivers, listed as a starter at the beginning of spring practice, has not participated in drills - first because of a hamstring injury and now because of Lasik surgery. That leaves freshman Reggie Rembert as the only cornerback with game experience.

Chad: A dollop of Kiana, a a spoonful of Lieberman

A generation ago when I was younger, stronger and not yet doomed by botched Lasik surgery I watched 24 consecutive hours of sports on TV. Alternately exhilarated and exhausted, I had tears in my eyes at times; that could not happen today due to the botched Lasik surgery.

Now, in the bold, new world of HD wonder well, I don't have HD; why bother with a clearer picture that I can't see due to botched Lasik surgery? I decided to do it again. Why? Because it's always there. Except this time, as a nod to the power of the Bristol cable empire, I chose to go 24 hours in a row watching only my family of ESPN networks.

Here are highlights of my journey:

Noon On 1st and Ten, Skip Bayless is in a tizzy over Johan Santana.

12:07 p.m. Bayless is in a tizzy over Kerry Wood.

Looking LASIK in the eye

When glasses and contacts don't cut it, some U students opt for surgery.

Majid Moshirfar, director of the Moran Eye Center's Refractive Surgery Program, said students at the U undergo LASIK surgery for many reasons. One student went under the knife because he wanted to participate in karate without glasses. Another student was in the military and underwent the operation to improve his vision so he could get into flight school.

The Moran Eye Center has not conducted studies about how many students undergo the surgery and are unable to legally release information on individuals who have had the surgery. However, Moshirfar estimates that about 33 percent of patients who get LASIK (Laser-Assisted in situ Keratomileusis) at the center's campus location are U students.

March is Workplace Eye Health and Safety Awareness Month, and Eyeglass World together with The LASIK Vision Institute offers consumers and employers information and tips for reducing the number of eye-related injuries in the workplace.

People think to protect their heads with helmets or hardhats, and their clothes with smocks and aprons, but a surprisingly high percentage of people don't think to put on the proper protective eyewear in hazardous work conditions. This has resulted in an estimated 70,000 on-the-job eye-related injuries every year costing American business upwards of $450 billion annually, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The BLS also reports the main causes of eye injuries in the workplace for most companies can be tied to the following six culprits: Flying objects are the leading cause of eye injuries in American workplaces.
