Study On Post-Lasik Quality Of Life

The American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) has announced that it will participate in a post-LASIK quality of life study with the Joint LASIK Study Task Force, which includes the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the National Eye Institute (NEI), ASCRS and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. ASCRS also announced that the ASCRS Foundation has committed funds to support this effort.

The FDA reaffirms that LASIK is both safe and effective. The Joint LASIK Study Task Force now will examine LASIK'S impact on the quality of patients' daily lives. Simply defined, quality of life refers to a patient's ability to perform the activities of daily living, everything from driving, daily routine, family life, career and sports performance, to personal appearance, after LASIK.

Troubling effects of Lasik surgery

I was vain.

That's the only way I can explain why I willingly let a doctor cut my corneas with a laser: vanity.

Little did I know when I chose Lasik surgery that I would not end up satisfied like the friends and acquaintances who raved about their post-glasses existence.

Instead, my days are complicated, since I am dealing with side effects that are far more bothersome than being unfashionably four-eyed.

I had been wearing eyeglasses since I was 8, and I was tired of never seeing the stars without glare, of not being able to go rock-climbing unless I secured my glasses. Not to mention the horn-rimmed barrier between me and a date.

I had trouble figuring out which side of a contact lens to stick onto my eye, so I never really gave contacts a chance.

I had been considering Lasik — short for laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis, which entails cutting and reshaping the cornea — since the Food and Drug Administration approved it in the late '90s.

Nats see no reason to worry

Ryan Zimmerman shrugged his shoulders in a nonchalant manner that wasn't meant to express indifference.

Washington's budding superstar third baseman just wanted to make it clear that even after a six-game losing streak there is no reason to fret. No matter what their record is two weeks into the season, the Nationals are far better off than they were a year ago – in both talent and the ability to compete in the tough National League East.

"If you start to worry now you're in trouble," Zimmerman said. "It'd be different if we were making four errors a game and throwing games away. We're going to get it together.

"We want to win of course. We're upset when we lose, but it's not like we're playing bad baseball," he said. "We just need a few things to go our way and win a couple in a row and we're right back where we need to be."

The euphoria that flowed through the oval clubhouse on opening night following Zimmerman's walk-off home run against the Braves has subsided a bit.
